HOW LONG DO SSDI BENEFITS LAST?

How long do Social Security disability benefits last once you are approved?

The Answer:  Benefits last for as long as you remain disabled, or until you reach your full retirement age.

What happens at retirement age?  Your benefit will continue in the same amount as in the past.  Only now, it comes out of the Social Security retirement trust fund, not the disability trust fund.  Don't worry, you won't know the difference.  The checks look and spend the same.

Can Social Security find that you are no longer disabled and stop your check?  Yes, that is possible.  Social Security conducts "continuing disability reviews" or CDRs every few years on most people who receive disability checks.  This is to determine if the recipient continues to be disabled according to the regulations.  You would be notified whenever a review is going to be conducted and given a chance to provide evidence.

Another question we often get is, "How difficult is it to be approved for disability benefits?"

The answer is:  It depends on the facts of the individual case; however, it is generally difficult.  Most claimants are denied at least twice (application level and Reconsideration level) and must appear before a judge to be approved.
